The Story of Johar's Bollywood Chutneys
Glamor, music, dance and other forms of arts have been celebrated by people all over the world for thousands of years. No celebration is ever complete without plenty of good food.
India has a very rich and diversified food culture that was developed over the years to satisfy the demands and passions of Emperors, Kings and Nawaabs. There are at least fourteen regional style foods in India and no matter how small or large an event, its success is measured by the elaborate display of unique kinds of foods created from guarded family recipes that have passed from generation to generation.
The Johar family comes from the northern region of India, namely Punjab. Punjabis are known as vibrant and hardworking people who at the end of the day want to come home to a loving family and a delicious elaborate dinner.
My memory dates back to my father’s mother who lived to be 97 years young. She shared many family stories and facts with me, including the secret and well-guarded family recipes that she inherited from her mother-in-law, my great grandmother. These recipes, she said, date back about 500 years and have been an integral part of meals at the “Johar Family” dinner table. From a very young age I have been passionate about gourmet foods and creating my own recipes. My mother saw this talent in me and in 1997 gave me three hand written note books in which she had compiled old family recipes as well as new ones that she had developed. She believed that I would be the one to carry forward the Johar family legacy. Ever since that time, I have been preparing foods using these recipes with minor modification to suit today’s demanding palate. I have received several accolades over the years, describing my preparations as one of the best tasting Indian recipes. My name is Pavan Johar and this is my story.
In October of 2010, my two Sons, Karan Johar and Kunal Johar, who love my “Hot Cilantro” chutney, suggested I package and market my Chutney for the enjoyment of all the food lovers, stating “All good things are meant to be shared with others”.
So here I am with my first chutney “Hot Cilantro”, to be followed by five other exotic gourmet chutneys. Cilantro chutney is universal chutney that complements over 100+ foods and snacks.
